During his annual State of the Nation Address at Cape Town City Hall, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa reiterated his nation’s dedication to facilitating a ceasefire in the Gaza conflict and ultimately achieving a two-state resolution between Israel and Palestine.

Emphasizing South Africa’s commitment to human rights and freedom, President Ramaphosa underscored the importance of the Palestinian cause in averting further casualties and devastation in Gaza.

South Africa recently brought a case before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, accusing Israel of genocide in Gaza. The ICJ issued an interim ruling, affirming its jurisdiction over the case and instructing Israel to prevent genocidal actions.

Ramaphosa expressed appreciation for the ICJ’s ruling, stressing Israel’s responsibility to prevent acts of genocide against Palestinians. He condemned the loss of civilian lives on all sides and urged all parties involved to embrace a peace process conducive to a two-state solution.

Al Jazeera correspondent Fahmida Miller reported from Johannesburg, characterizing South Africa’s ICJ case as a noteworthy achievement thus far. She highlighted Ramaphosa’s belief that no conflict is insurmountable and underscored South Africa’s unwavering support for the Palestinian people. The president affirmed the nation’s commitment to employing diplomatic and legal channels to pursue a ceasefire and a two-state resolution in the region.
