US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan engaged in talks with Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani today to address the ongoing conflict resolution efforts between Israel and Hamas. The focus of the discussion was on reaching a mutual agreement for a temporary halt in the hostilities in Gaza, along with the exchange of prisoners.

Both leaders emphasized the importance of releasing individuals categorized as sick, wounded, elderly, and women captives, as a critical step towards initiating an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, spanning at least six weeks. The White House issued a statement highlighting this initial phase of the ceasefire, which aims to facilitate a significant influx of humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza and create an opportunity to establish more sustainable solutions for lasting peace.

Earlier negotiations for a Gaza ceasefire in Cairo concluded without a breakthrough after three days of deliberations. Hamas spokesperson Jihad Taha conveyed that the resolution now hinges on Israel’s response. Taha noted that Israel has been resistant to demands allowing displaced individuals from northern Gaza to return and guaranteeing a comprehensive ceasefire and complete withdrawal.
