Nabweru court forwards 11 NUP supporters facing terrorism charges to the High Court. Shamim Malende, a defense lawyer to some of the accused calls for bail and a speedy trial.
The Nabweru Chief Magistrates Court made a decision on Tuesday to transfer the case of 11 Opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) party supporters facing terrorism charges to the International Crimes Division of the High Court.
The suspects, including Abdul Katumba, Abdallah Katumba, Muhamudu Kalyango, Hamidu Ssekidde, Sulaiman Male, Wilber Kairugara, Hamidu Muyodi, Issa Makumbi, Umar Magala, Rashid Ssebagala, and Salim Ssekabembe, were arrested at different times between May 2023 and February 2024.
Chief Magistrate Sarah Namusobya sent the case file to the High Court on March 5 to initiate the hearing process, although the state is still gathering evidence against the suspects.
Shamim Malende, a defense lawyer representing some of the accused, welcomed the decision to transfer the case, emphasizing the need for bail applications. She urged the state to expedite the proceedings and grant bail to her clients, citing their deteriorating health conditions.
The arrests stem from allegations made in May last year, accusing NUP supporters of involvement in terrorism activities, including the manufacture of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), without regard for public safety.
The National Unity Platform (NUP), is a relatively young opposition party in Uganda, which is led by Robert Kyagulanyi, a former musician who transitioned into politics. Despite his political engagements, Bobi Wine occasionally performs music.
