David Cameron expressed deep concern over a BBC report highlighting the mistreatment of Palestinian medical workers in Gaza by Israeli troops, labeling it “very disturbing.”
The UK’s foreign secretary urged Israel to provide explanations for the reported incidents.
According to the BBC, three medical staff members recounted being subjected to humiliation, physical abuse, and prolonged detention by Israeli forces. They detailed instances of being forced to kneel for hours, enduring beatings, and being doused with cold water.
Israel, however, maintained that any mistreatment of detainees goes against its regulations.
In a session at the House of Lords, Lord Cameron emphasized the need for clarity regarding the events at the hospital and demanded answers from Israeli authorities.
The issue was raised during discussions on the Israel-Gaza conflict in Parliament, with members calling for a thorough investigation and accountability.
Responding to queries from MPs, Foreign Office Minister Andrew Mitchell stressed the necessity for transparency and accountability, echoing concerns raised by the BBC report.
However, Amnesty International UK criticized the government’s response, calling for more substantial action and an immediate ceasefire in the region.
The incidents occurred during an Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) raid on Nasser hospital in Khan Younis, Gaza, on February 15. The IDF stated that intelligence suggested Hamas operatives were using the hospital, which Hamas has denied.
Footage obtained by the BBC showed individuals stripped down to their underwear, kneeling with their hands behind their heads outside the hospital’s emergency building. Medical professionals described instances of abuse and mistreatment during their detention.
The IDF denied specific allegations of mistreatment but asserted that any abuse of detainees contradicts its orders.
The BBC conducted an extensive investigation, corroborating details from various sources, including medical personnel, international organizations, and families of those affected.
The conflict between Israel and Hamas has resulted in significant casualties, with both sides accusing the other of aggression and human rights violations.
