Japan’s Diaper Industry Shifts Focus from Babies to the Elderly

2 min read

In Japan, a shift is happening in the world of diapers. It’s not about babies anymore; it’s about adults. Oji Holdings, a big company that makes diapers, is changing its focus. Why? Because in Japan, there are more old people than ever before.

In Japan, not many babies are being born these days. The number of newborns keeps going down. And when there aren’t many babies, there’s not much need for baby diapers. So, companies like Oji Holdings have to adapt.

Did you know that in Japan, adults use more diapers than babies? It’s been like this for a long time now. People are living longer, and as they get older, they need more help with things like using the bathroom. That’s where adult diapers come in.

Last year, Japan saw the fewest babies born in over a hundred years. That’s a big drop! Oji Nepia, which is part of Oji Holdings, used to make lots of baby diapers—400 million every year! But now, they’re making fewer because fewer babies need them.

Even the biggest diaper maker in Japan, Unicharm, noticed this change a while back. They started selling more adult diapers than baby ones way back in 2011. It shows just how much things have changed.

Now, the market for adult diapers in Japan is worth over $2 billion! That’s a lot of diapers. It shows how many older people there are in Japan. And Oji Holdings wants to keep up with this demand.

But this does not mean that they’re giving up on baby diapers entirely. They’re still making them in other countries like Malaysia and Indonesia. There, the demand for baby diapers is expected to go up.

Japan isn’t the only country facing this problem. Other places in Asia, like Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea, and China, are also seeing fewer babies being born. China even tried giving incentives to encourage more babies, but they’re still facing challenges because of their aging population.

It’s not just about diapers; it’s about the future of these countries. When there aren’t enough babies being born, it can cause problems for the economy and society. Governments are trying to help by spending more money on programs for kids and giving incentives to young couples. But so far, it hasn’t made a big difference.
