Renowned Muslim preacher Mufti Menk’s 2024 visit to Uganda saw him advocate for tolerance, family values, and productive social media use while addressing misconceptions about Islam.

Sheikh Ismail ibn Musa Menk, also known as Mufti Menk, a respected Muslim preacher and the grand mufti of Zimbabwe, led the Juma prayers at Makerere University Mosque during his third visit to Uganda last week. Additionally, he engaged in a religious and interactive session at the Kampala Serena Hotel on Saturday.

Mufti Menk’s captivating preaching style earned him admiration from a wide audience, including non-Muslims, for his inclusive and open-minded approach.

During his previous visit to Uganda, Mufti Menk emphasized the importance of rejecting hate speech among Muslim clerics, highlighting its detrimental effects on society and its contradiction with Islamic principles.

While Islam encourages large families, Mufti Menk criticized the practice of having many children without the means to provide for them adequately. He stressed the importance of manageable family sizes that could be supported for a happy life.

Furthermore, Mufti Menk advised young people to utilize social media for productive purposes like job creation, rather than indulging in gossip and online abuse.

Born on June 27, 1975, Mufti Menk is a vocal opponent of terrorism and has actively worked to combat religious extremism, notably in the Maldives. He urged communities, such as Liberian Muslims, to reject violence between Muslims and Christians, emphasizing their shared humanity.

Mufti Menk believes that Western media often misrepresents Muslims as terrorists, contributing to misconceptions about Islam worldwide.

In addition to his preaching and advocacy work, Mufti Menk serves as the head of the fatwa department in Zimbabwe and is recognized as one of the 500 most influential Muslims globally by the Royal Aal al-Bayt Institute for Islamic Thought in Jordan.
