Jericho Pays Tribute to Aaron Bushnell, a US Soldier Who Set Himself on Fire for Palestine

Jericho honors Aaron Bushnell, a US air force member who sacrificed himself in protest of the Gaza war, with a street dedication, symbolizing solidarity with Palestine amid ongoing conflict.

In Jericho, a small Palestinian town, a new street has emerged, bearing a poignant name – Aaron Bushnell Road. The town honors Aaron Bushnell, a 25-year-old US air force member who tragically ended his life in protest against the war in Gaza.

Mayor Abdul Karim Sidr unveiled the street sign on a quiet Sunday, emphasizing Bushnell’s profound sacrifice for Palestinians. “We didn’t know him, and he didn’t know us. There were no social, economic, or political ties between us. What we share is a love for freedom and a desire to stand against these attacks,” Mayor Sidr remarked to the small gathering on the newly named Aaron Bushnell Road.

Bushnell’s act of self-immolation, streamed live on Twitch, was a desperate outcry against what he perceived as complicity in genocide and a plea for a free Palestine. Despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries several hours later.

The conflict in Gaza has claimed the lives of over 31,000 individuals, predominantly women and children, according to the health ministry in Gaza. While governments in Europe and the US continue to support Israel’s campaign in Gaza, Palestinian solidarity movements have found hope in protests from Michigan to Madrid.

In Jericho, Bushnell’s extreme act is seen as a profound expression of grassroots solidarity. Amani Rayan, a Jericho city council member who hails from Gaza, expressed, “He sacrificed the most precious thing, whatever your beliefs. This man gave all his privileges for the children of Gaza.”

Critics in the US have suggested that Bushnell’s actions stemmed from mental illness rather than political conviction. However, Rayan disagrees, stating, “He was a soldier who with his last breath, despite the pain, shouted ‘free Palestine.’ This means he was clear to the depths of his being about why he was doing it.”

For Rayan, Bushnell’s act resonates with the legacy of Mohamed Bouazizi, whose self-immolation ignited the Arab Spring. She sees Bushnell’s gesture as an attempt to reignite the Palestinian cause.

Jericho wasted no time in commemorating Bushnell’s sacrifice. Just two weeks after his death, the town named a street in his honor. Mayor Sidr noted that this decision was made promptly to ensure Jericho would be the first.

The historic significance of Jericho cannot be overstated. As the gateway to Palestine, it holds deep symbolic importance. The unveiling of Aaron Bushnell Street adds another layer to its storied history, intersecting with Mahmoud Darwish Street, named after the national poet of Palestine.

In honoring Bushnell, Jericho hopes to keep alive the spirit of resistance and solidarity against oppression. As visitors stroll down Aaron Bushnell Street, they will be reminded of the sacrifice and the enduring struggle for justice in Palestine.
