Once again, civilians in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo find themselves in the crossfire as bombs rain down, forcing thousands to flee and leaving children lost amidst the chaos. Aid organizations have raised urgent alarms as fresh clashes erupted on Thursday, intensifying the long-standing conflict between M23 rebels and pro-government forces in North Kivu province.
The International NGO Forum in DRC expressed grave concern over the recent escalation, noting a disturbing rise in civilian casualties and the use of heavy weaponry in densely populated areas, including displacement camps. This surge in violence has triggered massive displacement, further exacerbating the plight of fleeing civilians and the communities hosting them.
Save the Children reported that since February 2, renewed fighting has uprooted over 150,000 people, with more than half being children. Amidst the chaos, parents lament the separation of many children, though the exact number of lost children remains unknown.
The Democratic Republic of Congo has long suffered from conflict, with over seven million people displaced, predominantly in the eastern region, plagued by armed violence for nearly three decades, as noted by the United Nations.
Recent clashes have centered around Goma, the capital of North Kivu province, following a temporary lull during the December 20 election that saw President Felix Tshisekedi re-elected for a second term.
Medical facilities supported by Doctors Without Borders in North Kivu have witnessed a surge in war-related injuries as armed confrontations intensify. Meanwhile, thousands continue to flee the latest round of violence, seeking refuge from the turmoil.
In a distressing development, thousands of displaced individuals arrived in Goma on Wednesday, escaping violence in the nearby town of Sake. Tragically, reports indicate six fatalities and numerous injuries in Sake amid intense fighting for control of vital highways linking strategic locations.
The conflict extends beyond Sake, with clashes reported north of Goma in Nyiragongo territory, involving M23 rebels and pro-government militias, known locally as Wazalendo. These confrontations have severed crucial north-bound roadways, compounding the humanitarian crisis gripping the region. Urgent action is imperative to protect civilians and facilitate humanitarian access amidst escalating violence in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
