At least nine people have been killed and numerous others wounded in an Israeli strike on an aid distribution truck in Deir el-Balah, according to Wafa news agency.

A witness, speaking anonymously to Al Jazeera, described the horrifying scene: ‘The area was showered with missiles, shrapnel flying around, body parts in the air.’

The truck was carrying relief aid with civilian volunteers onboard, delivering food items to displaced Gaza residents. The attack occurred in what was believed to be a safe zone.

Gaza’s Health Ministry spokesperson Ashraf al-Qudra later reported ‘dozens’ of casualties in what he called a ‘horrific massacre’ near the Kuwaiti roundabout on Salah al-Din Street in southern Gaza City.

UNICEF warned of dire consequences, stating that without immediate intervention, more children in Gaza would succumb to dehydration and malnutrition.

The violence coincided with reports of 15 children dying from malnutrition and dehydration at Kamal Adwan Hospital in Gaza City.

Despite negotiations for a potential truce between Israel and Hamas, mediated talks in Cairo faced uncertainty as Israel’s delegation remained absent, citing demands for a captive list from Hamas.

A Hamas official in Cairo expressed readiness to engage in discussions, stating, ‘Whether or not the occupation delegation arrives in Cairo does not concern us.’

While the situation remains fluid, a US official indicated Israel’s acceptance of a framework for a truce deal, though challenges persist in reaching a resolution.
