Israeli Tank Intentionally Kills Journalist in Lebanon — UN Report

2 min read

A UN investigation finds an Israeli tank’s attack on journalists in Lebanon, including the killing of Reuters reporter Issam Abdallah which clearly violated international laws.

Last year in Lebanon, a Reuters reporter named Issam Abdallah met his untimely end due to an Israeli tank’s action. The tank fired at a group of journalists, including Abdallah, violating international laws. The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) investigated the incident and found no exchange of fire prior to the tank’s action.

The UNIFIL report clearly stated, “The firing at civilians, in this instance clearly identifiable journalists, constitutes a violation of UNSCR 1701 (2006) and international law.” This resolution aimed to maintain peace between Israel and Lebanese Hezbollah fighters.

Apart from Abdallah’s tragic death, six other journalists were injured. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claimed they were responding to an attack by Hezbollah. However, they regretted the injury to civilians, emphasizing the importance of press freedom.

Reuters’ Editor-in-Chief, Alessandra Galloni, urged Israel to investigate and hold those responsible accountable. The IDF assured that their Fact Finding and Assessment Mechanism would thoroughly review the incident.

UNIFIL’s investigation, which included contributions from the Lebanese Armed Forces and eyewitnesses, supported earlier reports of the incident. However, the IDF’s response to UNIFIL’s inquiry remains unclear.

This incident underscores the risks journalists face, especially in conflict zones. It also highlights the importance of accountability and transparency in such circumstances.
