Argentina’s President Milei plans to move the country’s embassy to Jerusalem during his visit to Israel, supported by Prime Minister Netanyahu. His trip also includes meetings with Hamas-affected families and religious figures in Rome.
The President of Argentina, Javier Milei, said he wants to move the country’s embassy to Jerusalem during his visit to Israel. Milei, who is an economist and became president last year, was warmly greeted by Israel’s Foreign Minister, Israel Katz, at the airport. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu supports Milei’s decision. They plan to meet to strengthen the relationship between their countries.
During his visit, Milei went to the Western Wall in Jerusalem, which is important to Jewish people. He also met families affected by an attack by the Palestinian group Hamas in southern Israel. Hamas criticized Milei’s decision to move the embassy, saying it violates international law.
Milei describes himself as an “anarcho-capitalist” and has visited Jewish religious sites before. Argentina has a large Jewish community. After his visit to Israel, Milei will go to Rome to meet Italy’s Prime Minister and Pope Francis.
Milei has toned down his criticism of fellow Argentinians recently.
