Malaysia’s Prime Minister, Anwar Ibrahim, made a direct plea to Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, urging him to restore funding to UNRWA, emphasizing its crucial role in aiding Gaza’s besieged civilians.
Speaking at the Australian National University in Canberra, Anwar criticized the selective application of international law, especially in the face of Gaza’s ongoing tragedy. He pointed out the stark contrast in Western responses between condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and remaining silent on the suffering in Gaza.
“Why the discrepancy?” Anwar questioned, highlighting the international community’s reluctance to address the bloodshed in Gaza while swiftly condemning other conflicts.
Anwar also scrutinized the reluctance of some nations to support South Africa’s proceedings against Israel at the International Court of Justice for alleged breaches of the genocide convention. He emphasized the importance of appealing to shared values before a panel of judges.
Acknowledging shifts in stance, Anwar credited Australia, New Zealand, and Canada for advocating for a ceasefire and humanitarian aid. However, he stressed the need to halt violence against civilians and children in Gaza consistently.
During a meeting with Albanese, Anwar urged for UNRWA funding while investigations into alleged staff involvement in previous attacks continue. Albanese, while receptive, stated that Australia would assess funding at an appropriate time.
Foreign Minister Penny Wong, welcoming Anwar, highlighted the importance of advocating for a ceasefire, humanitarian access, and the protection of civilians. She emphasized the need for an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel, noting Malaysia’s lack of diplomatic relations with Israel.
Wong also addressed challenges in Australia, where some individuals championing human rights exhibit disregard for pluralism, resorting to intimidation, character assassination, and instances of antisemitism and Islamophobia. Despite challenges, she urged for Australia to remain a pluralist nation.
